Solar Panel Not Charging Battery — Diagnose and Fix

Symptoms: battery not charging · no charging current · zero input

Affected: panel, controller, battery

If your battery isn’t charging from solar, work through these checks in order — most fixes are wiring or controller settings, not a dead panel.

1. Check panel voltage first (multimeter)

  • Disconnect the panel from the controller and measure open-circuit voltage (Voc).
  • A 100W 12V panel should read 18–22V in full sun. Read 0V → broken panel or wiring. Read below 12V → shading, dirty glass, or panel damage.

2. Verify polarity and connections

  • Reversed panel wires are the #1 cause of “not charging” with a working panel. Charge controllers usually survive a brief reverse connection but show no input.
  • Check every MC4 connector and terminal — a loose crimp can read fine at rest and fail under load.

3. Controller input vs output

  • Measure voltage at the controller input (should match panel Voc) and at the battery terminals.
  • The controller should output 0.5–1V above the resting battery voltage when charging (e.g. 13.5V+ on a 12V battery). If input is good but output is zero, the controller is faulty.

4. Battery state and protection

  • A fully discharged battery can trigger low-voltage protection — the controller waits until the battery reaches a recovery voltage before charging again.
  • Check if an inline fuse on the battery line is blown.

5. Settings mismatch

  • PWM controllers need panel voltage close to battery voltage. A 24V panel on a 12V PWM system may never charge properly — that’s an MPPT job.
